"Ex In House" PARAMETRIC REDESIGN

The power of the parametric: a cube to sphere to both

A lasercut and 3d printed model of the Ex In House redesign in a trapezoid form with undulating white trapezoid second skin panels.

131 Round Lake Road, Rhinebeck, New York

A redesign transforming this usual Airbnb house into a seasonal glamping, off-grid holiday house nestled in the heart of Rhinebeck, New York's T2 Nature reserve, offering an escape from the bustle of the metropolitan lifestyle.

The scene is framed: an old College friend group spends their seasonal catch-ups at the Airbnb, decompressing from their morning nature hikes and outdoor activities together in the evening, either inside the warm, intimate house or basking together in the last afternoon light before nightfall. In Autumn, the group begins collecting enough wood to begin kindling a campfire as the sun begins to set, the temperature begins to drop, and their late-night catch-ups are yet to ensue, having not seen each other in months.

Using parametric design through Grasshopper, Ex In House's primary principles are redefined: compression and release, the collision between spheres and trapezoidal mass and a second skin that moves with the forest's leaves and echoes the trapezoid mass harbouring this get away.

This digital model was then adjusted for model fabrication by adding joints, selecting appropriate material types and thicknesses which accounted for both aesthetics and structural integrity for laser cutting , as well as identifying a detailed element to 3D print. Transferring the digital model to a rendering software afterwards transformed the model into an immersive and realistic evocation of materiality, context, programme and narrative to demonstrate the building's use and atmosphere.
