"ANTHESIS" PAVILION

The pavilion that opens up and allows you to wind down

The capsicum translated into an abstract shape, patterns and made into a paper model.

Mpavilion, Queen Victoria Gardens, Melbourne VIC 3004

Closed, increasing and open: using the stages of anthesis, affordances in each tier for the unpredictable and varying energy levels of living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome gradually accommodates full energy.

Interpreting this sense of movement and energy into a homogenous, warm and inviting timber ribbon form, this shape becomes looser, less tightly wound and open at each level as its user adjusts accordingly.

This fluctuates between appearing closed, requiring semi-privacy, recline and shaded areas to decompress and recollect oneself, which then transitions to a more open, yet supported and semi-shaded variation with improved proximity and participation in the main program.

Aligning with becoming fully open and receptive to the sun and the activity is a direct connection to the garden and the environment, unobstructed by seating with only upright backrests, a grass circle and the overhead sun illuminating and improving visibility of the main activity.

As the seating flows and ebbs and energy levels fluctuate, the pavilion ultimately disperses towards the exit, and thereby the wider Alexandra Gardens, serving as a natural pause before one is ready to embark on the energising surroundings of the garden.
